Skin Care: Skin Care for Women and Men over 50!
Skin care for men and women who have passed fifty years old becomes more of a necessity as much as a convenience. This is a time in your life when your body is going through many changes. If you are lucky, excellent skin care in your twenties, thirties and forties has resulted in minimal lines, sun damage and wrinkles.
As we age health issues begin to creep into our lives - high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease. Our skin begins to lose its ability to retain moisture and the skin renewal and rejuvenation process slows. Collagen fiber production decreases and elastin fibrous is reduced.
All contribute to the look and feel of your skin. For women the effects of menopause can further exacerbate skin problems with complex and ever-changing hormone, estrogen and testosterone changes - resulting in decreased oil production and increased dry skin.
To keep skin as youthful as possible follow these steps:
Stay with the routine you started in your teens or twenties. Continue to cleanse your skin twice a day. Do not forget to tone and moisturize your skin twice a day too. A skin care regimen should revolve around “cleanse, treat & moisturize”.
Do not forget your sunscreen. One of the primary causes of wrinkles, discoloration, age spots and other signs of aging is the sun’s rays. Protect your skin with a high SPF sunscreen daily. Even if your exposure to the sun is very limited continue your routine of applying sunscreen daily.
Pay attention to your skin as it ages, as you may need to change or add skin care products...shifting more to anti wrinkle skin care. In your fifties, an oily skin can quickly change to a dry skin that requires weekly exfoliation and daily moisturizers. Skin care for dry skin should be specifically consider for a daily regimen. Drying can be caused by a number of factors - lack of humidity, diet, normak aging process, overexposure to the sun. When considering a product focus on those that will help your tissue to retain and supplement moisture and hydration.
One of the major disadvantages of aging skin is that skin cell turnover time decreases. This leaves the skin looking dull and sallow. Chemical peels will help increase skin cell turnover and promote younger and healthier looking skin.
To get rid of dead skin cells between chemical peels try to exfoliate at least two times a week. Look for products with enzymes or AHA’s (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) scrub.
When you are in your fifties, your skin care regimen should involve regular trips to the dermatologist. You want your doctor to examine your skin for any sign of skin cancer or other skin disorders.
To look younger you might want to consider collagen or botox injections - or BOTOX® alternative such as an anti wrinkle cream or anti aging face cream. Both procedures result in younger looking skin. Another option is laser resurfacing which helps get rid of age spots and large veins just under your skin.
Maintaining proper skin care as we age into the fifties and beyond is important to younger looking skin. Improve and retain your skin’s health with a consistent routine that will aid moisturization, improve cellular turnover and even tone and color.
