Skin tags showing up are not really anything to be worried about but the reason behind them needs to be explored by a physician. Men and women both experience skin tags especially when they get older and the tags seem to show up on those who are overweight and in those with diabetes. Skin tags are more commonly found around the neck area, in the underarm region, under the breast area, and above or directly on the eyelid. The underarm area is the more common place to find these. You can pretty much bet that if there is one skin tag found, there are more in the same area. Skin tags happen to be on of those skin care topics where there is little to worry about.
What Are Skin Tags?
Skin tags show on the skin as a tiny flesh colored mark that is raised on a stalk that sticks out from the skin. They may be irritated by clothing, other body parts rubbing against them, or getting caught in jewelry. If they are shaved and cut, they will become swollen and sore and can bleed because of the individual blood supply they carry. The major disadvantage to having a skin tag is the way it makes you look. Those who have it find themselves feeling insecure and self conscious especially when on the face or an area that can be seen.
What Causes The Skin Tags?
The skin tag may be a reaction to high levels of hormones in the body especially when a woman is pregnant and those suffering from gigantism. For the diabetic patient, the insulin use can be a factor in causing skin tags. Some individuals are carrying around the virus that causes normal warts and this will not directly cause the skin tag but can work to bring it on. Those who work out or athletes using steroids (illegal) will definitely show skin tags. The steroids cause the body and muscle tissue to change the collagen makeup of the skin and the tags are created.
Are Skin Tags Dangerous?
As we said before, skin tags are not a problem but are more irritating than anything. It is considered to be a tumor but not in the same class as those that can cause cancer. These are harmless. It is still a good idea to visit your doctor if you think you have one to find out what the underlying cause may be. You might be able to get rid of them and avoid them all together by making some changes.
