Baking Soda and Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus, also called onychomycosis, is a disease caused by a group of fungus called dermatophytes that gets beneath the nails and takes root. As the infection grows, fungi feed on the keratin of the nail causing discoloration, yellow-ing, lack of rigidity and in extreme cases, disfigurement.

Treating fungal infections in the nails with baking soda is a common home remedy to treat nail fungus.

Causes of Toenail Fungus

Keeping the feet damp, warm and enclosed (in shoes) for extended periods of time is the major cause. People who work in jobs that call for wearing socks and shoes the entire day are more prone to getting and so are people who frequent public gyms and swimming pools where the toes are likely to be continuously damp, warm or moist.Toenail fungus treatment and baking soda

Toenail fungus is contagious and can spread from one toe to another under favorable conditions, but baking soda can stop this. Other causes include wearing tight hosiery, tight fitting shoes, abnormal pH levels of the skin and lowered immunity.

Symptoms of Toenail Fungus

Nail fungus symptoms are unmistakable. The affected nail starts thickening and turns yellow and then brown. After a while, the debris that accumulates under the skin will start emanating a foul smell and wearing shoes can start to get painful.

In the advanced stages of the disease the nails start crumbling, become weak and pliable and will eventually fall off. Also, it is not unusual for puss pockets to form as well as tenderness of the tissue.

Using Baking Soda to Treat Nail Fungal Infections

Baking soda, a "miracle cure" and home remedy for a wide array of health conditions, has been found to be effective for treating fungal infections for some. All you need to do is rub a paste of baking soda with lukewarm water onto the affected toenails, keep it for a while and then rinse off and dry the area thoroughly.

For best results this should be done regularly at least once a day. Soon after starting a baking soda treatment regimen, you may find your infected toe or fingernail coming loose and eventually falling off. Underneath will be a new nail already growing in to take the place of the old one.
